This project’s objective is to create demand for HIV services in Morogoro through community-based interventions while improving service linkages for at-risk individuals.
Project Overview
HACOCA, as a sub-grantee, played an essential role in implementing the HIV prevention component of the project in Morogoro specifically to Morogoro Municipal Council, Kilosa District, Mvomero District, Ifakara, and Mlimba Districts. Focusing on raising awareness and mobilizing key and vulnerable populations, HACOCA offered social behavior change education and community mobilization to HIV at risk communities to promote HIV prevention strategies, such as consistent condom use, and to inform individuals about available testing and care services.
In collaboration with local government, HACOCA linked clients to HIV testing services, which were administered by government healthcare providers under the supervision of EngenderHealth and Jhpiego. The demand creation efforts were focused on high-risk areas (hotspots) where key populations reside, ensuring those most at risk were reached with appropriate health information and referred for HIV prevention services.
Project Achievement
HACOCA successfully reached over 15,486 individuals across the targeted districts with Social Behavior Change and Communication strategies, linking them to HIV testing services. 8,114 individuals tested positive for HIV, and 94% were successfully linked to care and treatment services. Additionally, the project distributed 1,187 HIV self-testing kits and provided family planning services to 34,178 individuals. Through these efforts, HACOCA made a significant contribution to reducing new HIV infections and improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations in the region.
